Fertility and families

The area of fertility and families is structured into five main lines of research inquiring into aspects related with fertility; couple formation and families; relations between gender and divorce; household structure; and implications of family dynamics in social stratification. This field of research has enjoyed a long tradition in the Centre for Demographic Studies, going back to the 1980s with pioneering studies in Spain on cohabitation, divorce, marriage markets and single-parent families. At first, most of the research in this field was based on the situations of Catalonia and Spain in the European context. More recently, however, the scope of the research has become internationalised with comparative studies on the worldwide scale, these being fully engaged with present-day debate about the causes and consequences of family dynamics in society and the direction they are taking.
